Online MA in Education

Back to all Courses >>

The University of Cumbria is the largest trainer of teachers in the UK, with courses for initial teacher education and continuing professional development for experienced teachers. The University has a well-established MA in Education programme and a successful track record in developing and delivering accredited Masters Level continuing professional development. The Online MA in Education is our key framework for experienced international teachers wanting to develop their practice in teaching, learning, assessment, school improvement and leadership.

What’s in it for me?

The Overseas Teachers Network and the University of Cumbria recognise that colleagues working in the international schools sector have a desire to maintain their professional development and we wish to support this important teaching workforce in gaining recognition for this work at Masters Level. The Online MA in Education at University of Cumbria is designed to support your professional learning, to build your contribution to school improvement, to help keep you up to date on the latest developments in schools (including keeping in touch with UK schools) and above all to have a positive impact on your pupils’ achievements.

Workplace Learning

Masters Level study will be challenging for you as a busy teacher but the modules we offer are designed so that you will be able to investigate areas of your work that you are interested in and already developing as part of your everyday work. Engaging with the course will help you to make this enquiry work more systematic and more informed by previous research, it will also help to ensure that there is a positive impact on your pupils’ learning and your school’s improvement. The course will provoke, inform and support your professional development but most of the learning will take place through your work with your pupils and your colleagues.

Online Learning

The resources and learning activities supporting each module are provided to participants within a secure web site in Blackboard virtual learning environment. The Blackboard environment provides all the software needed to engage in your preferred way with the multi-media module resources which include the module guide, assessment guidance, key readings, interactive resources and links to relevant web sites. The Blackboard environment also provides the tools needed for interactive and collaborative working with tutors and other participants during learning activities, these tools include the discussion board, blog, wiki, digital drop box and live virtual classroom.

Online learning requires you to regularly engage online but it is mainly flexible so that you do not have to log on at particular times. Modules will also offer one or two optional real-time interactions within the online environment so that your tutor group may interact live with tutors and visiting professors. Tutor groups will be organised to take account of different time zones in which participants are based. A commitment of a few hours each week is required to complete a module but this will vary considerably between different participants, regular engagement and short periods of writing are the most effective approach.

The Blackboard web site for the module provides a one stop shop but via web links it enables you to access the huge resources of the University’s online library collection which includes e-books and online research journal papers. You will be helped to search for, select and critically engage with relevant published research that is close to your own chosen topic for enquiry and to apply this evidence and theory in evaluating your own teaching and professional practice.
